The Lone Star State has six public university systems, three of which have flagship campuses that are recognized as tier one research universities: the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston. All public, post-secondary institutions are overseen by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, however, each school is responsible for its own operations. Rice University is the state’s only private, tier one research institution and is recognized nationally for its academic programs. Given the size of this state, many higher education institutions offer distance education. Online college courses in Texas are available through many colleges and universities, including Texas Tech University, the University of Texas, and the University of North Texas.

In addition to a certificate in funeral directing and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Funeral Service, the institute offers an online certificate in funeral directing.
    • Houston Community College. As one of the largest institutions of higher education in the country, Houston Community College enrolls more than 70,000 students each semester. When it comes to online learning, HCC has much to offer with distance education credit courses, online continuing education programs, and online tutoring programs.
    • Institute of Ocean Technology. This institute focuses on ocean technology, research, and development. Through on-campus and online programs, students can earn certifications or an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
    • ITT Technical Institute – Houston North and South. ITT Tech offers education and training in growing career fields through technology-oriented programs at more than 130 campuses. At the Houston North and South campuses, students can choose from programs in information technology, electronics technology, drafting and design, business, and criminal justice.
    • American Intercontinental University – Houston. As one of three ground campuses in the United States, AIU Houston offers programs in business, criminal justice, design, and information technology. Career-minded students and professionals can take evening or weekend classes on campus, online courses, or both.
    • Center for Advanced Legal Studies. Specializing in paralegal education, the center offers ABA-approved certificate and AAS degree programs. To accommodate students’ schedules and learning styles, course delivery options include traditional classes, evening classes, and online interactive instruction.
